The Gypsy Roma Traveller Achievement Service (GRTAS) are very pleased to offer excellent workshops for schools including art workshops with Roma Artist Ferdinand Koci. They provide an exciting opportunity for schools to promote their equality, diversity and community cohesion agendas through the arts.
Marketa Sestakova grew up in a children’s home before she discovered the world of the Roma.
When she lost her job in the early 1990s she devoted more time to her artistic passion – embroidered depictions of Roma life.
An exhibition of her work was seen at West Park throughout June and has now moved onto the Thackray Museum.
Ferdinand Koci is a Roma, Meckar, from Albania - and well known in Leeds where he has previously exhibited during Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month 2008 and 2009 and shown his impressive skills in schools in the area.
He has exhibited all over Europe - in Albania, Yugoslavia, Italy, Poland, France, Spain and now exhibits in Leeds once more at Sevenarts.

There was also a local version of this competition just for people living in the Leeds area. That competition is now closed and the winners will be chosen and notified in due course. The main international version runs until 31 July.

The Gypsy Roma Traveller Achievement Service in Leeds (GRTAS) has a range of resources that are great for raising awareness of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) cultures in the learning environment.
They are specially useful for teachers, schools, youth groups and other learning establishments, who will be celebrating Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month in June and include these materials in the curriculum for all children.
