Gypsy Roma Traveller Leeds
The permanent site of the Gypsy Roma Traveller Communities
Thanks you for all the brilliant entries to this competition which came from all over Europe and also to Ferdinand Koci, Roma artist, for creating the beautiful poster ‘ O Baro Dive’ and Jess Smith, Scottish Traveller, author, singer and storyteller for judging and commenting on the entries.
The competition was to describe an image specially created by Ferdinand Koci (click on the image for a bigger view) in just 100 words. The image is a montage of Gypsy Roma and Traveller (GRT) images, representing the culture, music and some of the important events in the GRT year. Appropriately, it is entitled “O Baro Dive” which means “Celebration”.

The poster is available from GRTAS along with other resources. We are offering these resources for a limited amount of time to teachers, schools, youth groups and other learning establishments, who will celebrate Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month in June and include these materials in the curriculum for all children. These resources are free - you just need to cover the cost of the postage and packing for each item.

All winners and highly commended listed below have been invited to attend an Awards Ceremony in The Banqueting Suite of Leeds Civic Hall on Tuesday 17th November 2009 from 12.00 to 3.00pm to receive certificates and prizes. There will be presentations, readings and an opportunity to meet Ferdinand Koci and Jess Smith.
‘I was delighted by the high quality of the entries to Ferdinand’s poster competition. I was pleased to see how much each entrant saw the beauty within and also how, down to the youngest competitors everyone had great fun. This proved that is not so much the winning but the taking part in this magnificent competition that was important.
Gypsy Traveller Roma people are dedicated to a strong sense of family values and the continuing importance of community spirit. All entrants portrayed this along with varying colourful descriptions of horses, wagons (vardos) singing, music, storytelling and the sense of belonging to a world wide family of lovely people.
I was impressed by the use of ‘language’ because it made the entries extra special.I was also pleased to see how much of the culture was picked up on, and also how the poster encouraged others to become artists themselves. Others decided to put their picture into verse.
Overall this was a joy to judge !’

Every winner has received an invitation to the Awards Ceremony and we hope that they can attend with parents/carers and a representative from their school.
Those who cannot attend will receive their certificates and prizes by post.
All entrants fondly depict community spirit. The most important part of being a Gypsy, Roma Traveller. Jess Smith
