Gypsy Roma Traveller Leeds
The permanent site of the Gypsy Roma Traveller Communities
Ferdinand has led successful and exciting workshops for all ages combining art appreciation with practical work. He can demonstrate, encourage and inspire. Whether talking about his art, viewing and discussing artworks or working via activity sheets, Ferdinand’s workshops are lively and enriching.
The workshops include learning about Gypsies, Roma and Travellers (GRT) and show work by GRT artists. This gives an insight into the GRT culture and contributes to the equality, diversity and community cohesion agenda.
He can provide the experience of visiting an art exhibition; one of the requirements of the national curriculum. The workshop can contribute to the Stephen Lawrence Education Standard or the Gypsy Roma Traveller Achievement Programme.
1. He sets up the mobile exhibition in the hall or another space that children can visit during the day with their class teacher.
2. Classes through the day visit the exhibition - using the art activity sheets (Please adapt as you wish and simplify for younger pupils)
3. During their visit to the exhibition there is one painting that hasn’t a title and the children can suggest a title for the work and write this on a slip of paper with their name on and Ferdinand or a teacher could select the best for mention at assembly and award a small prize.
4. Ferdinand will do art workshops with different classes of pupils for about an hour and help them using different techniques - painting printing collage drawing – showing them how to do portraits works well using charcoal, pencil, gouache etc
He could do two workshops am and two pm.
5. Ferdinand would go into the hall and be there to discuss his work with individual pupils - usually the last five minutes of a group visiting so everyone could meet the artist
6. During lunchtime Ferdinand did portraits of two pupils and all the children had a chance to see him draw which is fascinating and does inspire them
7. There is also an international Portrait competition this year that you may wish to enter the children for and I enclose the entry form and details.
