Marketa Sestakova was born 17 January 1952, in Rokycany (Czech Republic). She grew up in a children’s home following the sudden death of her mother. Later during a search for her roots she discovered the world of the Roma.

She lost her job in the early 1990s and so was able to devote more time to her artistic passion – embroidered depictions of Roma life.
